SEM booking & general rules

  • The SEM can be booked maximum 2 weeks in advance.
  • The shortest bookable time slot is 30 min.
  • For long term bookings (like one week) coordinate with EMF members
  • Cancellation/modification of existing bookings can be done maximum 24 hours prior their start. Info email has to be sent to the group-em@lists.ist.ac.at. Afterward, only EM facility staff can do it (upon the user presenting a replacement person or a “force majeure”).
  • The EM facility staff can grant exception under the rules (needs a proper justification and will be judged on a case by case basis).
  • Only the person who booked the session is allowed to use the microscope.
  • It is strictly forbidden to use the instrument without booking.
  • Report any instrument problems immediately to the EM facility members.
  • After consulting EMF, samples can be stored in the desiccator in the room I06.U1.401d or f.
  • EMF is not responsible for samples left in the SEM room. They may be discarded at any time.
  • All messes and clutter have to be cleaned up.
  • After using the EDAX system, retract the EDS detector and warm it up. Turn off the software and the EDAX PC.
  • At the end of your session turn off EHT, remove your samples and pump the SEM chamber. Do not leave the room until the vacuum has reached the ready state. SEM software and PC should run the whole time.
  • Users have to fill required information in the log book after the session.
  • If you want to use the cooling stage (up to -25°C) contact EMF members.
