Scientific background

Bettina holds a Master’s degree in Molecular Biology from the University of Heidelberg (2012) and a PhD in Structural Biology from the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA, 2023), where she worked in Florian Schur’s group. Her doctoral research centered on developing advanced cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) methods to study the architecture of the extracellular matrix. Bettina joined the Electron Microscopy Facility (EMF) in 2025.

Role

At the EMF, Bettina’s primary responsibilities include biological sample preparation for cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM), with a particular focus on lamella generation via FIB-milling. She is also involved in method development and provides training and support to users.
